Dear Members,

LOTS of new listings this week, including two Rocky Talk and two Helen Verba Lecture Series events featuring notable speakers; congrats to John Ensslin for arranging all four programs.

And as you'll also see, someone gave club manager Carmen Green a 2009 calendar for Christmas, and he's filled it with special events for the membership, such as the Clambake, Sinatra Night, and many others; please take an extra minute or two and scroll through all the listings below.

Also, our thanks to Dan Danbom, Joe Sinisi and Carmen for ferrying books to the club on Saturday, 12/27, for the Jan. 9-10 book sale. And you can still donate books, CDs, etc. by calling Dan at 303-722-1846; he'll come pick them up.

The club will reopen this Friday, Jan. 2.
Thanks
Bruce Goldberg

Friday, Jan. 9 (6-9 p.m.) and Saturday, Jan. 10 (9 a.m.-noon), the club will hold its massive, semiannual book sale. On Friday night, it's open to members (and a maximum of one guest each). On Saturday, it's open to everyone, and we'll also have a pancake breakfast that morning.

tagline_bgTHIS JUST IN: The book sale will have a one-time special feature this year, courtesy of Janis Frame, who recently closed her well-known Book Buffs store.  Janis generously donated many special items, including about 100 signed first editions from such authors as Alice Walker, Margaret Atwood and Richard Ford, plus other books. These will be priced at only $10 each, with all proceeds going toward a special, one-time Jean Tool scholarship.

As usual, all other books will be bargain-priced at $3 for hardbacks, $2 for trade paperbacks, 50 cents for mass-market paperbacks and $1.50 for CDs and videos.

Saturday, Jan. 17, 10 a.m., JUMP (Version 2.0) is back!

Last year, when a wave of buyouts hit both The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News, the Press Club hosted a series of workshops called, "The Jump" which featured talks at helping people make the transition from daily journalism to their next pursuits.

With the recent grim news about the Rocky Mountain News being up for sale, Colorado SPJ and the Press Club have decided to revive this effort with a series of Saturday morning sessions at the club. As before, these talks will feature speakers with tips on job hunting, financial advice, counseling and other topics. These sessions are free. Watch for details in the weeks ahead.
